Travel

Where would you like to be right now? On a white sandy beach, a ski slope, in a major world city, exploring the Andes or some other remote part of the planet? Imagine that you are there now. What does it feel like? Are you at ease with yourself? In the zone? Why do you feel so good? Is is because you are doing what you want? Do you feel in control, free from the worries of daily life? Are you learning about yourself by exploring the world and your reactions to it? Having experiences in that great outdoor playground?

It is said that travel broadens the mind, gets us away from the mundane and the familiar, frees us from our limited experiences and opens up new vistas and makes new adventures possible. We can step out of one world and into another one. In the external world we see many variations on approaches to living our lives. In another place we feel freer  and see other possible ways of thinking and being. Experiences had alone and with others that enhance the tapestry of our lives. Our potential for creativity is enhanced. If we travel enough we see all sides of life including disputes, lack and need that can change us as people, our priorities and how we live our lives.

We sometimes seek in the external that which we lack internally, the freedom that we possess and sometimes fail to exercise. Can we overcome internal constraints with external stimuli? Not really, but travel does allow us to take some time out to contemplate and explore these avenues.

The real boundaries and borders are in our heads and overcoming them sets us free. We can choose what to or what not to believe and how to respond to external stimuli. This involves becoming aware of and challenging our own unconscious absorbed cultural biases thoughts and assumptions and trusting in our true nature. The only time we have is now and the only real freedom is our way of being right here right now.
